Burton Manor edge out Stafford in close encounter
Burton Manor v Stafford is as tasty a local derby as you’re likely to get in the ladies badminton league, and the latest encounter was no exception.
The Burton Manor team got off to a flier with Karen Mayer and Hazel Boote completely dominating their first match. The second match was a much closer affair. At one game all and growing in confidence, Val Bennett and Jean Reid played some deft shots to keep the pressure on their opponents. However, the Stafford ladies managed a last-gasp clawback to snatch the match 22-20.
Diane Allen and Wendy Hayes also found themselves in a scrap in their first match and, with one game apiece, it looked like another tense contest. However, the two showed their class in the third, pushing their opposite numbers about the court and cruising to a comfortable victory.
There was no opportunity of relaxing in an evening where fortunes swung one way and then the other. Mayer and Boote and later Allen and Hayes both won and lost a match each, but Bennett and Reid lost theirs in very tight games. When the dust finally settled Burton Manor had managed to scramble a well earned and entertaining 5-4 victory over their local rivals.
